Fit Tip: Range of Motion
When it comes to weight lifting I have changed my mind on the importance of form over the years. I have corrected my own form on many exercises and restarted and dropped weight just to get it "perfect". While proper form during exercise is important, don't put so much emphasis on it that you are scared to try anything new. Some imperfect squats and lunges are better than none at all. Doing zero squats and lunges will definitely hurt you, doing some less than ideal versions regularly will most likely just make you stronger and you will learn better form along the way. Learn by doing. One aspect of good form we should all agree on is using full range of motion. For example: when doing a pushup, you descend until your chest or belly taps the ground then push upward until your arms are fully straight. Similarly, when performing a pullup you start from a straight-armed hang and pull until your head is over the bar, descending back to a straight arm hang or the next one doesn't count.
Using full range of motion when weight lifting turns every exercise into one that trains mobility as well as strength and hypertrophy. Imagine doing a tiny little quarter squat with tons of weight to satisfy your ego only to find you can't comfortably body-weight squat all the way to the ground without falling over. You are missing out on gains. You are putting the work in anyway, you may as well fully train the muscles even if you need to lighten the load a little in order to do so.
December Challenge: Start Before the New Year
The time of the New Year's resolutioner's is almost upon us. The most popular resolution made almost every year is to get in shape. Let's beat the crowd and get a head start. Maybe you are already working out regularly but have been putting off a certain type of training you said you would start doing. Maybe you keep putting off those Bulgarian Split Squats for some other time. Start now. Make fitness a small part of your everyday life during one of the busiest months, because if you can "fit it in" then you will be able to get it done anytime.
Whatever you have been dragging your feet to start doing, do it this month. Set a goal; make it small and actionable. Be specific.
Win the weekend!
